Push-up counter

Prop up your phone or laptop, turn side-on, and the camera counts every push-up. Prefer not to use the camera? Tap the button for each rep instead.

Counting runs in your browser. Camera video never leaves your device, and nothing is recorded or stored.

How to set it up

  1. Put your phone or laptop on the floor or a low shelf, side-on to where you'll do push-ups, about 2 meters (6 feet) away.
  2. Tap Count with camera and allow camera access.
  3. Get into position. When your whole body from head to feet shows in the frame, the counter starts.
  4. Do your reps. Each one counts when you come back up.

What counts as a rep

The counter watches the angle at your elbow. A rep counts when you lower until your elbows bend past about 100 degrees, then press back up until your arms are nearly straight. Half reps don't count, and shaking at the top or bottom won't add extra reps. It also checks your body is horizontal, so it won't count while you're standing or kneeling up.

Tips for accurate counting

How many push-ups should I do?

Do one set to your best clean form and note the number. A simple plan is three sets a day at about half of that, adding one rep to each set every few days. Quality beats quantity: a straight line from head to heels, elbows at about 45 degrees from your body, and chest low.

Push-ups when an urge hits

A hard set of push-ups takes about a minute and leaves no attention for scrolling or cravings. That's the idea behind RepOut: when an urge hits, you tap Move and the app counts your reps. On iPhone it uses the Face ID camera, so it works face-down and even in the dark.

Questions

Is my video recorded or uploaded?

No. Pose detection runs inside your browser using Google's MediaPipe. The video never leaves your device, and nothing is saved.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android, as well as on laptops with a webcam. Prop the phone up so it can see you from the side.

Why isn't it counting?

Make sure your whole body is in view and you're side-on to the camera. Lower until your elbows clearly bend, and press all the way back up.

Can I count without the camera?

Yes. Tap +1 rep after each push-up, or press the space bar on a keyboard.
